Guidance is useful, especially when we choose the right kind. If you are want to understand more about what coaching is, it may help to understand how it differs from consulting, therapy, and mentoring.
Consulting vs. Coaching A consultant is an expert who will tell you what to do. In coaching, you are considered the expert on your life, and the answers for how to improve it lie within. A coach helps to draw out those answers through attentive, thoughtful listening; powerful questions; and astute observations.
Therapy vs. Coaching Therapy is meant to address mental health challenges and is often an exploration of the past and problems. Coaching is more present and future oriented and focuses on solutions, and often action. Coaching like therapy can facilitate personal development and a fuller understanding of self.
Mentoring vs. Coaching A mentor is an expert in a particular field who provides guidance for someone with less experience in that field. A coach has expertise in supporting people in developing themselves. Coaches work with their clients as equals.
